TITLE:
Perception of Seeing
WHAT:
A ‘Spot’ for Science Channel and their ‘Question Everything’ series
ABOUT:
For this concept we wanted to question the act of seeing through Gestalt psychology. Principles like, similarity, proximity, figure ground, emergence, and closure describe how our brain is actively processing, and organizing the data we see in the world. We used these principles to guide us in abstracting objects found in a coffee shop.
APPROACH:
Our approach for this sequence was to follow the point of view of a woman who visits a coffee shop. Each frame represents an action or object thats been abstracted challenging the viewers’s visual perception. As the woman puts on her glasses, the space around her and the objects become clarified into a single gestalt.
PERSONAL EXPLORATION
OF TREATMENT AND COLOR
It was a challenge to balance the level of abstraction and the recognizable so for a another pass I wanted to simplify some of the shapes within the image and try a natural palette to offset the complex forms. I also wanted to try giving some of these frames a seamless look by vectoring the line work.
ORIGINAL FRAMES AND SEQUENCE
PROCESS
Together Ailis and I went through several ideation phases that explored different possibilities of sequence, actions, compositions, and styles of abstraction which lead to our final direction. My individual role for the original frames in this sequence was to finalize composition and shape language in frames 1 through 4 and illustrate frame 5 to unify the sequence.
Mood and Treatment
Frame Development
Here is an example of a few frames I designed and their development. We started with a literal representation and with every revision pushed the abstraction further and further. We needed to consider balance between making the frames recognizable enough to find familiarity but also abstracting it enough to give our brain a workout.
